We are currently accepting applications from highly experienced and skilled instructors for a short-term intensive language programme in Nagano-ken beginning in July 2009. Applicants must be able to commit to a 10-week contract. We require experienced, native-level English speakers for this position, with university qualifications from a recognized institution. Previous teaching experience (a minimum of 2 years) is a must. Ideally candidates should have teaching experience in either Japan or experience teaching Japanese students. Teaching qualifications (CELTA/TESOL/BEd/PGCE etc) are preferred but not essential.

The training programme is an intensive 65-day, 6-day-a-week course. The students are all volunteers with Japan’s overseas development programme. On completion of the training programme the volunteers will be dispatched overseas for 2 years. The course is designed to provide students with the tools and confidence to work and interact in their host countries.

Teachers are responsible for creating lesson plans based on a set syllabus, and then teaching the 210-lesson programme. Teachers also are responsible for the regular testing of the students’ progress, setting mid and end-of-term exams, homework and self-study tasks. There are on average 6 students per class (a maximum of 8). The focus of the teaching is functional, practical, and communicative.

For these positions, we offer an attractive monthly salary (less national income taxes of approximately 7%) of approximately 330,000 yen, FREE furnished housing with no moving in costs (utilities not included), reimbursement of travel expenses, free transportation to and from the training centre, subsidized health insurance, subsidized lunches, and free Japanese lessons (offered online).

There are four terms per annum:

Japan Continues To Hire Nurses and Caregivers

Despite the Global Financial Crisis, employment of Filipino nurses and caregivers in Japan remain according to sources. On the other hand, a prediction from economic analysts say that Japan’s growth will be negative this year. In the United States alone, thousands of employees lost their jobs. No wonder, Filipino workers have become concerned that Japanese companies and factories might layoff some of their employees.

Filipino applicants (especially nurses and other health care workers) to Japan were apprehensive that job opportunities in Japan will be less this year. This is because nursing job opportunities in the Philippines are limited and Japan is a good place of employment for Filipino nurses despite the fact that there are more jobs for Nurses in Canada and other Asian countries like Brunei, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea.

“Japan is still in need of well trained nurses and caregivers”. This need to employ Filipino nurses and caregivers was stated by Mr. Makato Katsura, Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines. The Japanese ambassador also said that the crisis would not result to vast dismissal of Filipino employees. He also said matching of demand and supply is now in process. In fact, Japan has begun recruitment of Filipino nurses and caregivers. This 2009, between April to June, first batch of recruits will be in Japan to take 6 months of Niponggo training course before being employed to health care facilities.

Despite the financial crisis, Japan is still to hire Filipino nurses and caregivers as provided by JPEPA. Under JPEPA or Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement, 300 caregivers and 200 nurses are to be employed in Japan yearly.

JPEPA is a treaty signed on September 2006 by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in Helsinki, Finland. In 2008, the treaty was ratified by the Philippine Senate.

Peso-Yen Exchange Rate Remains High

This is a good news for all pinoys working and planning to work in Japan.
The current Peso-Yen exchange is at .526 (slightly down from its high at .54). This is a very steep climb from the same month last year where the exchange rate was only around .36.

Imagine if you are working in Japan with a salary of 250,000; thats an increase of salary from around P90,000 to P130,000. Imagine receiving that kind of increase without getting promoted.

Pinoy nurses in Japan to get $1,600 monthly

"Filipino nurses and caregivers are wanted this year in Japan.
As part of the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement or JPEPA, the hiring program will begin with the initial recruitment of 200 nurses and 300 caregivers. (The JPEPA has been ratified by the Senate and took effect last December.)
The nurses will be receiving a salary of around US$1,600 or around P76,000 a month, but they must have a three-year work experience.
Caregivers, on the other hand, are set to receive an estimated $1,200 or P57,000 a month, but they must be graduates of a four-year course.
Applicants shall be required to undergo an aptitude test and interview.
After selection, they must pass the required medical examination where applicants have to pay the basic fee of P1,500 as well as visa fee which is P1,150.
The airfare and on-site training costs shall be shouldered by the employers in Japan.
The selected candidates must undergo a 6-month language and culture training in Japan.
During the training, candidates shall receive an allowance of more than P21,000 a month.
Caregiver Lorie Lynn Arellaga speaks fluent Nihonggo after she worked for many years as an entertianer in Japan. At the outset, it would seem she has the advantage. Unfortunately, she isn't qualified since she only finished the required 6-month course in caregiving in the Philippines. She is also not a college graduate.
“Kung ganun din lang, sa iba na kami mag-aaply--Dubai, Saudi, London...sana babaan naman ang standard nila,” Arellaga says.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) says they will study the agreement after a year and propose adjustments.

Cebu Pacific flies Manila-Osaka route

CEBU Pacific (CEB), the airline business unit of Gokongwei-owned conglomerate JG Summit Holdings Inc., will fly direct from Manila to Osaka, Japan three-times weekly starting November 20, 2008.

Using its 179-seater A320 aircraft, the new service departs every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and arrives in Osaka at 6:25 p.m. The return trip takes off at 7:10 p.m. and arrives in Manila at 10:05 p.m.

Osaka is CEB's first destination in Japan and it's fifteenth in Asia after Bangkok, Guangzhou, Ho Chi Minh, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kaohsiung, Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur, Macau, Pusan, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore and Taipei.

Lance Gokongwei, CEB president and CEO, said: "Japan has a very active and vibrant travel market. This service will be strategically important to the country's tourism agenda and should also help us attain our goal of flying seven million passengers this year." He added: "the Manila-Osaka service will likewise allow our overseas Filipino workers to come home more frequently because of our trademark low fares. This will also generate interest among the Japanese market for our competitive medical and wellness tourism packages in the Philippines."

CEB is offering a one-way introductory fare of P1,999 on the Manila-Osaka route, a price cut of 70 percent from the current fares offered by other airlines. The seat sale runs from September 16 to 30 and is good for travel from November 20 to December 18, 2008. Fare is non-refundable and exclusive of applicable surcharges and government taxes. After the seat sale, the lowest year-round 'Go' fare is P3,999, still a price cut of 40 percent from the current fares offered by other airlines for this route.

CEB explained that passengers who avail of their 'Go Lite' fares could get P200 off of their fares. Bookings can be made via cebupacificair.com, CEB's call centers, sales offices or travel agents. Gokongwei emphasized: "with this long awaited announcement to fly to Japan, we hope that the public will take advantage of our seat sale and book their flights now." (PR)

I am in the Philippines. How can I find work in Japan?

Ans: One way of finding work in Japan is through the various recruitment agencies. But be careful though of illegal recruiters. These agencies match applicants to their pool of employers. If lucky, the agency could get you a contract and apply for your working visa. Most of the jobs offered by agencies, though, are entertainment-related.

Another way is to go to Japan on a tourist visa. Once in Japan, you can search for prospective employers and acquire a contract and COE (Certificate of Eligibility). Tourist visas allow foreigners up to 3-months stay in Japan but are not allowed to work. Once you acquire a contract, you can apply for a new visa (this time, Working Visa). IT, Engineering, Teaching, Nursing, Caregiving, Entertainment and other blue-collar jobs (Factory workers) are the common positions held by many Filipinos here in Japan.

Online applications are also viable options for finding employment in Japan. There are many websites advertising job openings (ex. englishtreejapan.com) for foreigners looking to move and work in Japan. Most of these jobs are English teaching-related.

Lastly, one could also search for a Japanese-run company in the Philippines. Most Japanese companies (mostly IT) usually have offices in Japan. They sometimes send Filipinos to Japan either on a business trip or to work at the company's Japan office.

I want to go to Japan on a tourist visa and try to search for prospective employers? How much will this cost me? How much is the average living cost per month in Japan?

The cost of living in Japan (esp in Tokyo) is higher compared to that in the Philippines. Below is the rough breakdown of the cost of living in Japan.

Round-trip plane fare (MLA-JPN-MLA): around P35K-P40K
Apartment Rental: P15K-P80K/Month (Depends on the area and type of apartment)
Daily Living Allowance: P800 (could be higher or lower)

In summary, the average monthly living cost in Japan is around 40K pesos or 100K yen.Some or most companies offer free transportation (subway train) to employees, thus cutting down expenses. In my case, our company subsidizes our apartment cost and reimburses our transportation expenses.

What is the average salary-expense ratio in Japan for foreigners (Filipinos)?

Starting salary range: 200K - 300K Yen (depends on the type of work).
Thats around 80K -130K pesos.

Average expense: 50K - 120K Yen (house, food, transpo). Thats around Pesos 20K -45K
Average savings: Pesos 40K-80K / Month (Taxes/etc. deducted)

In this post, I will be discussing the different types of Japanese Visa and the people who are eligible for each type. I will also discuss the requirements for visa application and the types of visa needed to be able to legally work in Japan.

A. Short-term Stays

Short-term stays refer to temporary visits of up to 90 days for such purposes as sightseeing; sports; convalescence; visits to relatives, friends, or acquaintances; amateur participation in athletic meetings or other contests; business trips (such as market surveys, business liaison, business talks, signing contracts, and after-sale service for machinery imported into Japan); and friendship visits. These activities require either a temporary visa or transit visa. (However, this category excludes profit-making operations and paid activities.)

Acquiring a short-term visa my be helpful for anyone looking for a job here in Japan. Please note though that foreigners with short-term visa cannot legally work here. What they can do is look for prospective employers and acquire a contract. I would say that 90 days is a long enough time to look for work here in Japan. Once a foreigner has a contract, he/she can reapply for a working visa. Acquiring a contract and a COE (Certificate of Eligibility) makes the application for a working visa processed faster. COEs are applied by the employers in Japan.

B. Work and Long-term Stays

If a foreigner wishes to enter Japan for activities other than those described in section A, he or she will need a diplomatic visa, official visa, working visa, general visa, or specified visa. Naturally, foreigners who enter Japan having acquired a working visa are able to work in Japan.

With the current trend today, more and more Filipinos are seeking to find employment abroad. Some opt to migrate permanently and some opt to work abroad just to alleviate their financial status.

Many Filipinos are very hardworking. Many Filipinos are highly-skilled. However, for Filipinos who look to work abroad, not all are given equal opportunities. Whether they be Nurses, IT Professionals, Engineers, Teachers, etc. luck and money often are big factors on getting employment abroad. And I believe that having the right information divulged to everyone, in some ways, diminishes the aforementioned factors.

I am a software engineer who works here in Japan. And I am going to share some information, for those who seek it, on how I got here and found work.

Remember these things as a guide on how to find employment in Japan. I will be updating this blog from time to time for it to become better organized and consequently become more useful. As for now, I am just going to give you a rough picture of how I got here.

1. For my first visit in Japan, I came with a 3-month "Business Visa". I acquired this business visa because I already had a Japanese employer in the Philippines. I was sent on a 3-month business trip to Japan.

Documents needed: Passport, University Records (TOR), [Past] Employment Record, Resume

For the business trip, our company in the Philippines acquired the services of Discovery Tours in Makati to process my visa application.

2. After the 3-month business trip, I went back to the Philippines. That time I already had a COE (Certificate of Eligibility) which was applied for by my employer in Japan. I also had a CONTRACT to work at our Japan office (The company I work for has offices in the Philippines and in Japan).

I appied for an 3-year Engineer's visa (again, Discovery Tours) and then I applied for OFW status at POEA (with me are my COE, Contract, Engineer Visa and other relevant papers).

This was basically how I found employment in Japan. But there are other ways. And I will be writing about them including FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) on how to apply for work here in Japan.
